Legal and Mental Health Services Arrive for Expats in Shekou (Guangdong)
Guangdong Province’s Foreign Legal Assistance Center Inaugural Ceremony, Accompanied by the Simultaneous Opening of the Foreigner Mental Health Counseling Center.
On the morning of September 24 under the auspices of the Shenzhen Justice Bureau in cooperation with the Shenzhen Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government, Guangdong province’s first foreign legal assistance center, named Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center, conducted its inaugural ceremony.

This platform will provide integrated legal services as well as mental health counseling services. The center will directly serve foreigners residing in Shenzhen by the provision of inclusive, community-oriented services from lawyers and will also aid in items such as notary, mediation of disputes, psychological counseling, and other medical services.
From the establishment and development of the Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center, there will be a progressive effort to develop the sector of expat services with an aim to provide precise, superior, and effective service to support foreigners in their time here and to help establish a home-like, comfortable atmosphere.
The Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center will operate Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Beginning in October, the Center will provide free mental health counseling services for foreign residents from professional counselors via Shenzhen Chengmei International Medical Clinic. These appointments can be scheduled in advance every month on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 3:00 to 5:20 p.m.

Mental Health Counseling, such as Individual, Marriage, and Family Counseling; depression, anxiety, burnout, addiction, anger management, impulse control, interpersonal and family relational difficulties, sleep difficulties, loneliness, and other stress-related conditions.

.Support for Expat Cultural Adjustment, such as challenges related to living in foreign countries, life or job transition, cultural dysphoria, language barriers, differences in cultural expectations, and related topics.
In addition, Shenzhen Chengmei International Medical Clinic has a medical team headed by Dr. Frank Ho, a Chinese-American born and raised in the United States who received his medical degree at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. Medical services provided include general internal medicine, lung/breathing problems, sleep difficulties, and health-management. As such, expats can freely communicate their medical needs via English.

Shekou’s population of approximately 10,000 foreigners is not only among the highest of the various districts in Shenzhen but also in the entire country of China. With the opening of the Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center, the Shekou Sub-district management has taken a critical first step in developing legal, mental health, and medical support for expats residing here in Shenzhen.
