American in Shanghai Quarentine 21 days and counting….
I flew into Shanghai / Pudong airport on 9/21…tested positive for Covid-19. Like many I have no idea how I contracted the virus. The only symptoms I experienced after the first few days (probably 5 days total) was loss of taste/smell.
Thought i’d share some experiences and pose a few questions that people might have insight to…
I started off at the standard “14 day quarentine hotel” at a Novotel close to the airport. 4 hours to get out of the airport. What a process. Of course nobody speaks english (to be expected not a complaint) and everything is done on wechat. So , try to find someone to help with all that. I have NO idea how anyone could come here and not have a smart phone + wechat.
Anyway, after day 2 they notified me i’m positive. The moved me to a very, very bad medical center for 1 day and took blood, CT chest scan & viral test for virus. Spent night in a truely terrible room. Could share photos…anyway, next day they brought me to the “Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center”.
I’ve been here for 19 days now at this center. Every day at 5am they swab my throat, every night at 5pm they tell me i’m positive. I’m rooming with a Brittish flight attendant and a Russian sales person. Both have simaliar stories to mine….came here for work and now we sit.
There is a manditory 10 day minimum stay here at the SPHCC. Once you test negative 2 days in a row, they send it to the CDC for testing. If any one of those tests come back positive , the 3 day protocal resets…so back to test 1, test2 / CDC, etc. So once you test negative, you have another 3 days to be dismissed. My roomates have both had the first negative, second negative and then the CDC says positive. Back to square 1 haha.
I feel completely normal. They gave me some “eastern medicine” i had to sign a waiver for….it tasted like Jagameister / Grass & black licorice. Truely terrible haha. Took that for a week or so, 3x a day. Still positive.
Food could be worse…its fine. I even figured how to have my colleague in Beijing (where i’m going for work) send me pizza. It takes 3 horus after they inspect it and god knows what they do to it , but cold pizza is nice after so many days.
So its day 19 and i’m stuck here until i get a positive. I’m reading online that people can not be contagious and yet will register ‘positive’ for months. I’ve already herd stories of people being in here for well 6-8 weeks.
After i get out of here , if i ever do, I have to go BACK to the original “quarentine hotel” and restart the 14 day isolation in a hotel room. After that i can fly to Beijing , but then must do ANOTHER 7 days quarentine in a hotel there, as it is in a different province.
I feel like i’m never going to get out of here. Thanks GOD I have a internet connection haha.
Thought i’d share the experience & see if any out here in reddit land has the same experience or any insight about forigners getting out of the other quarentine hotel BS once they are officially negative and have the antibodies?
Cheers
