My Chinese father, Doctor Li
Author: PK
I arrived in China in November 2012 as a foreign student. In 2016 I met this wonderful girl, I call her Miaomiao. She came with me to my home town in Sri Lanka where we fell in love. In September 2017 we found out that she had lung cancer. After her checkups, doctors said she didn’t have much time left because her cancer was stage four.
She said to me that she would never be able to marry me so I married her in October. It has been a very hard time with her, especially, her temper (haha). I was not the perfect husband, but I tried my best. She is a wonderful person, who inspired me and gave me strength. Together we went to the cancer hospital in the Chinese Academy of medical sciences in Beijing.
At the hospital, I met a doctor called Li Jun Ling. He was the nicest man that I’ve ever met. I felt like I had found another father in him in Beijing.

There were times when I wanted to run away from my life, but Dr. Li gave me the strength to be this person who I ended up being. He always treated me kindly and with a smile that I will never be able to forget. As a foreigner, doctor Li who made Beijing my second home. I was not the best husband but I also had a lot of hard times in my life. He really appreciated me for who I was, while some people thought I was stupid or a loser.
There was a time when my wife went to a temple in Changchun. She was listening to the monks there and stopped taking her medicine. Her situation got worse, so her brother and I drove from Beijing to Changchun to pick her up and came back. It was a very tiring journey. Her brother drove all the way for 12 hours there and pick her and drive her back to Beijing. She was paralyzed at that time. I really want to thank her brother because I don’t think anyone would drive all the way like that it was so difficult for him.

Without him, I would’ve been stuck. By the way, I and my family are Buddhists but that place in Changchun was a disgrace to Buddhism. After that, I called the doctor and explained to him about this situation. He is one of the busiest doctors in Beijing but he always called me back and told me about we should do to treat her and about the drugs we should use. He even asked me to come and see him before he started his shift around 7 am. At that time it was coronavirus pandemic in Beijing. He was really tired every day but he still called me and asked how I am holding up.

Without doctor Li, I don’t believe that she would have been able to walk again and recover from being paralyzed. He made me fall in love with china more and more. I want to thank him and the oncology department in Beijing Yanqing hospital.

And her uncle Lao Er (老二) there were sometimes I felt down he used to come and cheer me up. I was an outsider in his village, but he treated me as his own family member. And her parents treated me as their son, especially her mom. I have seen a lot of superhero movies but I was lucky enough to meet one – Doctor Li. I’m so grateful from the bottom of my heart.
